Can’t Keep Quiet About the Tacos at the Library

Can’t Keep Quiet About the Tacos at the Library

During my last year of living in Southside area of Pittsburgh (3 years total), I went to The Library (2302 East Carson Street) quite frequently for happy hours, darts and pool. I was attracted to The Library because of its amazing happy hour special, wide selection of drinks, high quality food, my favorite bar games, a cozy, literary themed atmosphere, relaxed people (a lot of young professionals) and a minimal crowd.  The classic hammered brass bar is also a nice touch.

The awesome happy hour they have daily includes half-off drafts from 5 to 7 pm and 10pm-12am (late hour happy hours are always a great find), and half off small plates from 5 to 7pm and 9pm-1am. The timing of these happy hours are very convenient for dinner and late night outings. In addition to the set happy hour special, they have extra daily specials. When a friend told me that Monday was $1.00 taco night, I had to immediately check it out.

This is a mantra we can get behind!

With the $1.00 taco special, you have to place an order for three of the same kind of tacos (Just like El Burro’s taco special deals). This is where I recommend bringing other taco loving friends with you so you can switch and swap orders. The fillings to choose from include sausage, fish, veggie, pork, chicken, and beef. My friend and I ordered the chicken and pork. And of course we ordered beers from their draft list (half priced) to go with the tacos.

$1.00 tacos, and half price drafts. How good is that?!

We did not have to wait very long for the tacos to come out from the kitchen. The three tacos were topped with thick cut cheddar cheese, lettuce and a spicy sour cream. There was so much cheese melted on top that it almost covered all the other toppings completely. The spicy sour cream was not too spicy, was thinner than most sour creams and was a whiteish pink in color. I really thought it added a unique touch to The Library’s tacos. The tacos were served in soft flour shells. The shells were a little tougher than other shells I have tried so each bite required a tougher pull with the teeth. The chicken was in chunks, but tasted fresh and was easy to chew. A large plastic cup of salsa was served on the side which I used on the chicken tacos. The pulled pork tacos were sweet and had a lot of very juicy meat inside, as the sauce started to soak through into the tortilla shell but was still manageable to eat. The server told us that the pulled pork is made daily in-house and that The Library goes through A LOT of pulled pork. I am guessing that it’s the same pulled pork they fill in their bomb quesadillas, and if so the fact they go through a lot of it doesn’t surprise me.

After eating the tacos, my friend and I continued with the happy hour drinks and got ourselves into some darts. Heads up to the dart players, the dart board closest to the entrance, gives you more credits per dollar but you have to hit the red button after each turn. They also have a pool table between the two dart boards. Upstairs, they have another dartboard and pool table near the second bar. It’s a great set up, and a place I will continue to go for drinks and games and now tacos too!
